Ink Blot Coasters

inkblot*Every month for a year I will receive a Darby Smart DIY Box in exchange for a review.  All opinions are mine and only mine.

My February DIY box was something that I was not expecting.  Then again, I never know what to expect from these boxes and that is what I love most about them.  This month I received Ink Blot Coasters.

In the box were the instructions with helpful photos and the following tools: 4 white tile coasters, cork dots, 3 colors of ink, alcohol, Mod Podge, and a sponge brush.

IMG_1196The instructions were clear.

1. Put the cork dots on the bottom of the tiles.

2. Squeeze a fair amount of the alcohol onto the tile and spread it around with your sponge brush.

3. Uncover the colors you want and drop the colors onto the tile.

4. Let them dry before applying a thin layer of mod podge.

What you have to be careful with is the ink staining your fingers.  I had not expected this to be messy..but it was for me.  Something was especially wrong with the plum color as the color seemed to seep from every surface, dripping all over my fingers.  I was glad I had thought about putting the tissue paper underneath to shield my furniture from the ink.

The best part was watching how the colors melded together. I actually spent a substantial amount of time just thinking about how I wanted it to turn out and what colors I could mix together to get something even prettier.  None of your coasters will come out the same and I love how unique it is.

IMG_1197IMG_1199I can’t really pick which one is my favorite but I really love the multi-colored one and the pink and yellow one. They are so bright and bold!

IMG_1200IMG_1203I can’t see what Darby Smart has in store for this month! Have you tried a Darby Smart product? What did you think of it? I would love to hear your experiences!
