GHD: A Review

GHD Jade flatironGHD this, GHD that, I’ve been hearing GHD since I was in middle school and I’ve always been curious.  Is it really better than the Chi? Is it worth the price?IMG_1914I had such a hard time picking which of three colors I wanted. I purchased it from Sephora so they only had two colors–and the one I had my heart set on was not one of them.  The lavender was my first choice but I am glad that I settled for the Jade.  It doesn’t look much of a jade in reality–more like a neon mint.  In case you didn’t know, GHD stands for ‘Good Hair Day”, isn’t that adorable!?

According to the GHD website, the product features are the following:

  • Advanced ceramic heater technology for smoother, shinier results
  • Sleep mode: switches off if not used for 30 minutes
  • Universal voltage for consistent performance when travelling
  • Round barrel: creates curls, waves and flicks as easily as it straightens
  • Extra long 9 foot swivel cord for freedom during styling

GHD-Pastel-CollectionThe packaging is adorable. I love that it was introduced as ready-to-wear hair.  The flat-iron heated up incredibly fast in only 30-40 seconds compared to my Chi that lagged behind.  It was a lot easier to hold the GHD and I enjoyed the size and sleek look.  It heated up just hot enough to glide through my hair effortlessly.  Usually, I would hear my hair burning and force the flat iron through it.

The problem I did have was that I couldn’t really curl my hair correctly.  The ceramic plates are so smooth that I was not able to twist the iron and keep my hair between the plates.  I will have to look into that and see if there is a certain way to do it. Another awesome feature is that it goes to sleep after 30 minutes of inactivity. I’ve never forgotten it on but it’s nice to know that the GHD has my back!

At $199, it is a bit steep as many flat irons are in the $70-$150 price range.  I purchased mine from Sephora so I could take advantage of getting all those points (Hello, VIB Rouge for another year! ;D). I also felt safer buying it from a site that I am already familiar with.  If anything were to happen, I could just return it in store to Sephora, no problem.

Pros:

  • Heats up quickly and not too hot, still does its job
  • Goes to ‘sleep’ after 30 minutes
  • Glides through hair effortlessly
  • Cut down on the time it takes to do my hair

Cons:

  • Struggle to curl hair
  • Price a bit expensive

I overall really like the flat iron, I sort of wish that I tried the original first as many of the reviewers on site stated that they preferred the original.  The color is pretty but not really a ‘jade’. The iron doesn’t heat up crazy hot which I like because it makes me feel like I am not frying my hair to a crisp. It leaves a beautiful shine in my hair that I’ve never gotten from a Chi.

Overall Rating: 9/10
