How to Revive Old Denim with Embroidery

DIY: Easy Embroidery

Crafitiness is not in my blood.  Sewing is always something I’ve had an interest in but never the confidence to pursue it. I might try it for real one day but for now, hand-sewing and embroidery is where I am going to start.  Embroidered jeans are so in and for a while, I have been obsessing over them, but it can be expensive. The solution? I took a pair of denim that I had lying around and began to personalize it a bit to my taste.

What you will need:
  • Denim jeans or shorts (I got Levi shorts)
  • Embroidery needles
  • Embroidery thread
  • White chalk OR white pencil OR white gel pen
  • Scissors
  • Optional: Tracing paper

My trip to Disney is nearly a month away and so I wanted something Disney inspired to wear while at the parks.  I thought why not Alice in Wonderland? Wanting to be different, I did not want to be the person who had the usual “We are All Mad Here.” phrase. Andrea and I decided on having me do “Down the Rabbit Hole.”

The Steps:
  1. Mark where you may want your words to be.
  2. Write it onto your denim.
  3. Back stitch it in. If you do not know what a back stitch is, it is a sturdier way of making sure that if one stitch unravels the rest does not.
  4. You’re done!

Some tips I suggest is to use pencil or pen. I went in with chalk first but it disappeared easily every time I lifted my shorts. I then went in with white pencil so that I could easily erase it but it would not disappear every time I moved it. I also added tracing paper to my list since it would be easier to sketch, erase, and then tape it down to the jeans. When all done with your sewing, simply rip it off. I know now for next time but I was still proud of this and how it came out.
