Tips to Land a Summer Internship

Ah, summer..the sun is shining and university is finally done for the semester..but no break for you! You need to get an internship to gain valuable experience in the field of your choice whether it be Fashion, Finance, or Medical.  Summer is the time where the competition gets tough, you are not the only school that is out for the summer, so chances are you will be competing with people from other states and countries.  Here are ways to make you stand out and land that internship!

1. Resume

Your resume is key to getting your internship, it’s you but on paper.  Please limit your resume to 1 page, it isn’t an essay.  If your experience passes one page (Which is great!) cut it down to the experience that will most likely match the requirements of the internship.  If you want to intern for social media and you have a soccer coach position on it, it is just taking up valuable space.  Bullet points are a great way for an employer to scan your resume without having to jump into all your wordiness. Keep it short, sweet, but informative.

2. Dress to Impress

You may not care how you look like to others, but you have to look just as good as you do on paper.  We would all rather be wearing some comfy lounge-wear but please leave the jeans at home.  Invest in some great basics pieces that can we dressed up or down.  If you are planning to enter finance or business, invest in a great skirt suit (ladies) or suit (guys).  It’s better to be overdressed than underdressed, trust me.  You never want to show up at an interview in jeans (not even a fashion interview!)

3. Research!

Put your research skills to the test! Research the ins and outs of the company you want to intern for or interviewing for.  Try to think of compelling questions that really showcase that you did you part of the bargain.  They want to find the best match for their company and you want to show them that you really care.  Don’t show up to an interview knowing nothing about the company, be prepared. (Trust me, it won’t end well and you will be kicking yourself in the head).

4. Portfolio

A portfolio in addition to your resume and references will edge out all the competition.  I have a portfolio full of my best writing, styling, and work samples.  Just like how a presenter would use a visual aid to reel in the audience’s attention, the portfolio will do the same.  It will impress them for sure!

5. Confidence

Yes, interviews are intimidating and nerve-wracking but keep your head high and breath deeply.  They will soon become second nature to you and you can only learn from your mistakes.  Don’t be afraid to ask questions or give the interview the best you can.  If they sense your confidence and willingness to face challenges, they will very much consider you.

The competition is stiff, even in the summer. If you don’t manage to land one this summer don’t be afraid to try Fall/Winter or Spring internships. Good luck!

Heartbroken and Horrified

I know everyone is sounding off on what happened yesterday at The Boston Marathon but it is something to stop and think about.

We take life for granted and we often forget that things like this can happen anywhere and at any given moment.  We can’t see the future and as much as that would help, we are powerless.  My heart goes out to all the family and friends of those who were in Boston at that time.  It must’ve been a terrible scene to witness and simply looking at photos is enough to make anyone cringe and say a prayer.

Life is a valuable thing and we often get caught up in the little things.  The next time we start to complain about something small, stop and think about how you only have one life to live.  A horrible event always makes us stop and remember and we band together, stronger than ever.  Live life positively and to the fullest, you only have one shot…so make it count.

We are with you Boston.  Much love sent your way.

Good Things Happen to Those Who Wait!

It’s been a hectic past few weeks between all my school assignments and projects. I’ve been going non-stop to interviews and it’s been exhausting! I thought it was my part-time job! But all the waiting and going to interviews has finally paid off! I am going to be a Marketing/PR intern for a jewelry company (WOO!) I just hope I can finish this semester quick so I can have more time to blog!

I will give some tips about internships and what to expect by tomorrow!

Spring = New Beginnings

I’ve been absent for a little and for that, I am sorry. Ever since I came back from Spring Break I have been drowned in tests, midterms, projects, and work. I’m glad to be a busy body though! I’ve been non-stop going to interviews as well. Hopefully I get a call soon!

Registration begins soon at my university and I am taking on a new challenge! I want to get a Makeup Artistry Certification. I am not that great of a makeup person but I want to learn to be able to do my own makeup even better. Yay!

I would love to hear from other bloggers. What made you blog? What are you hopes for your blog and what is your blog all about?

As Luck Would Have It

I was going to upload photos and write several different posts when lo and behold my camera refuses to even give me the option of uploading when I plug it into the computer. My Macbook isn’t even sensing it when I plug the USB in..great. I’m going to have to resort to using my phone and well..hopefully save up enough to buy a nice camera.

Don’t forget to enter my giveaway here.

You can put your email and name at the bottom of any post, just so I know who to contact when the computer randomly picks. I will be using random.org for that so I have no say in it!

Enjoy 🙂

Back to the Daily Grind

I once find myself in frigid, less than desirable temperatures. I have returned to the Northeast..and I did not miss it. I came back to Jersey when the sky decided to drop some snow and rain onto us.

I didn’t do anything overly exciting on vacation other than spend some much needed family time with my aunts, uncles, and grandmother. I tried to tan a little but it didn’t work,no matter how long I stayed out in the sunshine, my skin was too resilient. I did manage to go to a few thrift shops but only found a tan cardigan for $6. I begin school tomorrow once again and Wednesday I find myself with several internship interviews (Fingers crossed)!

Like I promised, I will do a giveaway by the end of this week or next. I am deciding what items I should do and I was wondering what you guys would like! Nothing too expensive but nothing too cheap either! For now, I will continue to roam the imaginary aisles of Sephora.com before I make my trudge there this weekend.

Positivity is Key

Today has been a great day. It was a bleak and chilly day as I made my way to school with only about 6 hours of sleep. I did the usual, take notes, and make my way to the cafe on campus with a friend. We were chatting and I was checking my email when I saw I got one from one of the internships I had applied for. I don’t know if it’s a good thing to just say the name but it’s a company known for owning many great fashion magazines.

I got an interview! It’s about a week and a half away, and I’m still racking my brain on what I should wear, take, and ask. Another great thing that happened today, is that my night class was canceled, woo! I am home in my favorite little pjs and just relaxing before I start cracking down on my homework. I am slowly getting many of my projects down, which is relaxing me.

I’m the kind of person who loves getting ALL their homework done on a Friday so that they could have the weekend full of freedom. It’s a great thing, positivity. Positivity brightens your mood and makes even the bleakest days bearable. I must admit, I’ve always been the person who was a little on the negative side, always letting the smallest things stress me to the max. Now that I am in university, I don’t let things get to me. You get used to the bumps in the road and it’s only natural.

All you have to do is breathe and relax, everything happens for a reason. You always need to look on the bright side, even on the cloudiest of days.
